WTF??!!! I would be highly offended if I was Dylan. Being portrayed by a woman? What are they thinking?
Isn't Oprah supposed to play him too?
And Paula Abdul too.
I've checked and seen this report elsewhere, but still, c'mon. It just sounds too unlikely. Nevertheless, if this is the case, he's got material for another protest song. "How many roads must a man walk down, until they'd let him be portrayed in a biographical movie by a man", or something in that style.
Bob Dylan is an artist (and I mean that in the general sense...) and as such I highly doubt that he'll be "offended" by this choice. He's played by several different people in this movie and it's pretty clear that this is in an effort to show the many facets of his personality which have morphed drastically over the years.
This is, in essence, an abstract painting of Bob Dylan. It'll be bizarre, sure... but then so is Bob Dylan. Being a poet, I suspect he would be pleased.
But Brian, Bob Dylan is a man, a straight man at that. What is the purpose in having him portrayed by a woman. As there are plenty of male actors that I'm sure would be more than willing to play the part, they must be trying to make SOME kind of statement. What, I'm not quite sure.
They're making an artistic statement, and the kind that I contend Bob Dylan would understand.
Bob Dylan -is a man- but it's hard to argue that he has (in the past) written in ways that many would not see as masculine. The whole -point- of using multiple actors to portray Dylan is that he has multiple facets of personality and that you can "metaphorically" show those facets through different types of people. As he was an activist for Civil Rights and was involved in some "roots" music, it would also make sense to portray him as a black man.
I guess it's easier to understand this sort of technique (and why one would utilize it) if you're involved in a creative field or if you have an arts education.
Hehe. He wasn't exactly the most masculine looking man in his younger years.
I don't see this as being so bad. Glenn Close played a pirate in Hook (scroll down to "Gutless") and totally pulled it off. This might be kinda cool. Anyway, like Von said, Dylan wasn't exactly the burliest kid on his block.
